Early June 2022

It is a dreary rainy Friday in June, so it is a good day to blog.

We have been catching up on outdoor work recently. The grill wasn’t heating evenly so it required some attention. I cleaned it up and checked the burners and the hoses. It needed the grease trap replaced. So I got it whipped into shape for another grilling season.

Mud Hole Update

Work progresses. Unfortunately it seems to loose water faster than expected. Hopefully it is just a small hiccup. The dueling waterfalls are now in operation.

The ‘Koi’ pond is not deep enough to be a year round pond. It will be drained and flushed late in the fall. We do plan to stock it with feeder goldfish for as long as they last. We plan to give them fish food but have a reasonable expectation that in this environment they will in turn become fish food. In the mean time, the birds are taking full advantage of the water feature’

Kayak Adventure 2022-04

We went back to the Piscassic River Boat Launch, but this excursion earned it’s own identifier. Andrew and Mark went to fish. Meg had her friend Su along and it was a kayak familiarization and exploring adventure. We did go further into the Lamprey river this time. Disclaimer: Mark fished and Su used his Nikon P900 complete with grinding gears to take these pictures.

Meg and Su happened on a river otter den.

River Otter Den

River Otters are known to exist in the Lamprey River.

The ladies were so excited to see river otters that Meg went home and got her camera. The otter cooperated and was still active when they got back.

American ‘Yellow’ Warbler

Andrew and Mark had a great time fishing while the ladies were exploring. It was early evening, cloudy with a light breeze and the fish were active. We caught a lot of panfish, a few perch, bass and black crappie. Mark also got a chain pickerel up to the boat before it bit through the line. We are using ultralight tackle with four pound test. If we want to boat a chain pickerel we will need to add a tougher leader to the fishing line.

Su didn’t have any problem adapting to the pedal kayak and found that they are quite easy to use. She also liked having a superzoom point and shoot camera. It was quite an adventure.

BOIDS

The usual characters keep showing up at our house. However we haven’t seen any hummingbirds recently.

Chuckie

We counted ten deer in the yard at once. Soon they will have their babies and we will be flooded with deer again.

Fun with Food

Su also wants to go fishing, so we plan to get out a few more times while she is here. She also wants to eat some lobsters. Again we will do what we can to accommodate her.

  1. Looks like you’ve had some fun showing Su around. That Yellow American Warbler is crazy beautiful & how cool to find the otters! Keep up the Ruff Life.
