Early December 2020

I am at a crossroads, I can either blog or do Christmas cards. I suppose it is not hard to guess what I chose to work on this morning. It is hard to generate much enthusiasm for doing cards in this very challenging year. It has been a year of uncertainty, fear and loss. It can be hard to put on the happy face and send out the cards, which is not one of my favorite things even in a good year. Fortunately the cards are all prepped for me. We picked out the photos and had a custom card made at snapfish and I printed out our labels. Wink put the labels and stamps on my cards so all I have to do is personalize them, sign and seal. So on with the blog….

Boids

We had a Nor’easter that knocked out power for eighteen hours. When we did the addition we added an automatic backup generator to the house. This is the second time this fall that we have used it for extended periods of time. It seems like it was a good choice. Thie birds seem to know a storm is brewing.

Eagles on Perch

This might be a pair. The female eagle is slightly larger than the male and the eagle in the foreground is looks slightly larger to me.

Crows on Eagle Perch

Some geese migrate and for some reason some overwinter. The overwintering geese have tended to do well recently and so we have a flock of geese around. I am guessing the same is true for ducks.

Mammals

The SQRLS have found the heated bird bath on the front stoop.

I have a new favorite creature.

Pine Vole

There are two voles native to New Hampshire and only one has a short tail, introducing the Pine Vole. Research by Meg.

Fun with Food

We all have to eat and cooking can be a creative outlet. It will take some real imagination but consider being reduced to eating Mark’s cooking. It is a horrible, inconceivable, utterly nasty, gross fate reserved for the unlucky, unfortunate few.

We aren’t going to restaurants and not doing take out, so we are reduced to making it ourselves. This is a pretty basic stir fry, Jasmine rice, chicken breast, shrooms and veggies. We precook the chicken in peanut oil at high heat with a little garlic. Then we stir fry the veggies until tender and use a store bought sauce to bring it all together. We managed to eat it all in one sitting.

We now have snow on the ground and are expecting rain and then more snow. I have been slacking on my picture taking. I will pick up a camera once I get the cards done.

We have had a little movement on the camera front. Meg got a GoPro Hero Nine and this may take the blog in a slightly different direction. We have had fun with videos in the past. Mark remains too cheap to part with any money.

One more admonishment. STAY SAFE. We can see the end game in this pandemic, don’t let COVID fatigue reduce your vigilance at this late stage. I am looking forward to the end of the self isolation but it is still a scary thing.
