Kayak Adventure III

We got some feedback on the last blog that it was hard to see the belted kingfisher in the picture.

Belted Kingfisher

We didn’t get any good pictures of that bird. They seem to be pretty shy. So the only thing to do was to go back out and get new pictures of a belted kingfisher and pileated woodpecker. So Meg, Andrew, Benji and I headed back out to get some new pictures. The primary objective was the belted kingfisher and pileated woodpecker!

So we headed back to Shackford Point, the last known location of the birds we were seeking. Benji went with Andrew in the fishing kayak. This freed up Meg so we both brought our good cameras with us.

In Search for the Elusive Belted Kingfisher

There was not a lot of bird activity and we despaired of finding anything. Meg was photographing an interesting bird nest.

What she failed to realize is that its owner was right next to the nest.

Who Dat?

The bald eagle wasn’t paying us any attention and then Benji barked. Neither Meg nor I was prepared for that.

The eagle hung around us for a bit but then gave up and took off.

We continued our search for the elusive birds.

So we failed in our primary mission objectives. We didn’t find either a Belted Kingfisher or a Pileated Woodpecker. I guess the only thing to do is go out and try again. But that is another story.

  1. Good try though. Love the bald eagle & it’s flight. Ditto the heron. Thanks for the diversion. We took a landlubbers trip through the Kancamagus and though the colors are a bit duller than in past years, it’s still beautiful. Would recommend it. Ruth

  2. Thanks for sharing! My first thought when I saw the nest was, that is either a big hawk or an eagle!! Well done troops!
