News from the Home Front

After a year and a half, we finally have a kitchen cooktop.

We had a downdraft propane cooktop that was 24 years old and it started to leak. We had to disconnect and get it replaced, choosing to replace it with an induction cooktop. The reason it took so long was that the original cooktop was a thirty inch cooktop and we could not find a thirty inch induction cooktop with integrated downdraft. We found a unit that had an add on downdraft and the first contractor said we didn’t have space for it and said it couldn’t be done. We evaluated our alternatives and mostly didn’t like the alternatives we came up with. We got lucky and found a contractor that was willing to take on the job. We finally have a cooktop!

It is spring and we are waiting for the weather to improve before we get out on the water. We did acquire a hullavator to facilitate one person loading a kayak on the car roof.

The yard is just full of birdsong. The birds are sure that spring has finally come.

The crows have been active as well. We are getting two different sets of crows: American Crows and Fish Crows. You can tell them apart by their calls. It seems to me that the Fish Crows are less skittish than the American Crows in that they will come up to the porch and ask for a supplemental feeding. The American Crows seem to be more skittish.

Meg got the first pictures of the pileated woodpecker and then Mark got a better set from the bird feeder on the deck. I guess now Meg has retaken the lead with this set from her back yard. The gauntlet has been thrown down and the challenge accepted.
