Late January 2021

January has come and gone. February was ushered in by another Nor’easter but that will be the subject of the next blog. As Januarys go, this was a pretty mild one. We did get bouts of light snow. The first one melted the next day and the second one stuck. With the white background and clouds, it did provide an opportunity to play with the cameras. The soft diffuse light seemed like ‘good’ lighting for the pictures I take.

Light Snow

So I unlimbered the cameras and took a few pictures.

BOIDS

Cardinal

This is getting close to the pictures I aspire to. The light is good and the focus and definition is good. I still need to work on framing and composition. But is fun to keep trying.

Here is a gallery of the pictures to peruse:

We have not seen any turkeys recently.

MAMMALS

We have not seen any mammals during daylight. We bought a new stronger spotlight. We surprised some mammals with it.

Duhr using Spotlight

We heard a fisher cat screaming at night. It was unpleasantly surprised to be caught in the spotlight but it didn’t hang around for pictures.

Fun with Food

It is difficult to keep the menu fresh and appetizing. We have sort of fallen into a rut. One thing we like is easy to make foods. However our repertoire in this regard is rather limited.

Meat and Potatoes

We have been very fortunate as we have qualified for the vaccine in Phase 1B due to our extinguished feature of being close to ancient. Both Wink and I have had our first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and are scheduled to get our second dose in a couple of weeks. That removes a worry about our immediate health but it won’t end our COVID precautions as we are early beneficiaries of the vaccine and we want to help maintain the health of the herd. So stay safe until you can get vaccinated and follow the recommended protocols to keep others safe once you have been vaccinated.

  1. Thanks for the nice photos and IDs on each. I might finally learn the names of the birds at my feeders
