Well we now know who is boss in our yard. Male turkeys tend to settle their dominance disputes in he fall. So when spring arrives they can focus on more important things.

Early this morning there were a male and female turkey under the bird feeders.

Male and Female Turkey

The female was aggressively defending her territory from the crows.

Scat Crow

There was a dominant male nearby and he immediately began courting the female.

Maybe next year

The pond has awakened after the winter. It is becoming warn enough that we can feed the fish.

How many survivors

It is tough to be a fish in our pond. I don’t think the smaller ones will survive.

As far as I can tell, these three are all bullfrogs and two are large enough to eat the smaller fish.

Unfortunately for the fish, growing large enough to be immune to the bullfrogs make them more attractive to the birds.

Boids

We added a feeder to the deck feeders and moved them all to the same level.

Bird Feeders

Left to right on the deck: hummingbird nectar, no mess tube, meal worms for the bluebirds, jelly for the orioles and suet for the woodpeckers. Down below we have a tube feeder, suet, a flat feeder and put scratch and crow food on the ground.

Fishing

We went freshwater fishing for the first time in 2025. We were looking for post spawn chain pickerel. These would be the largest fish we were likely to catch. We did connect with two larger fish but didn’t land either. It was fun anyway.

Green Heron

Other than that, not much is going on in May.

Great pictures of the animals……both wildlife and the party kind! Sorry to miss those Cinqo at Bill and Cally’s. Looks like it was a blast!
