Holiday Bird Watching

Question: What happens when you give Su the Nikon P1000 to play with?

Answer: You end up with 900 pictures which is too much for a single blog. So todays blog is single themed.

One of the things we especially like about this house is the BIRD Channel. We do feed the birds and they are a delight to watch.

I am not sure where to start, so I will start with the bigger birds. The eagles put on quite a show.

Eagles

This is a pair of adult Bald Eagles. You can tell by their white heads and tails. Typically the male is 30% smaller than the female, so I would guess that we have a pair here with the male on the right.

Somehow a juvenile eagle grabbed a meal and other birds wanted it to share. As far as we can tell it grabbed a fellow bird.

Four Juvenile Eagles and a Crow

The eagles weren’t the only predators active as we had both Coopers and Red Tailed Hawks in the yard. One red tail snagged a meal as well.

Red Tail with Lunch

I guess the next largest would be the turkeys.

Tom Turkey (spurs and a beard)

It is still waterfowl hunting season around here for the next couple of weeks.

Can you tell the difference between a hairy and downy woodpecker?

We had a flicker here as well.

Wink’s Nemesis: English Starling

I guess that is it for the bird blog. Still have one more 2022 blog to do and am collecting pictures for 2023 blogs.

We had fun taking and comparing bird pictures.

  1. We hate those woodpeckers! They seem to like dismantling our house! I don’t care if they are pretty!

  2. What exactly is the difference between the two woodpeckers? Love the shot of the cardinal in the winterberry.

    1. The downy woodpecker is smaller by about 30 to 50%. You can remember this by down being finer than hair.

I enjoy your blogs. I think about you and your family when I see heavy snows etc in the northeast part of the country. Could you give me an indication of where you live?
