This week is a special week around here with two significant holidays. So my blog will deviate slightly from my normal postings.
PI Day
March 14 is a day for Nerds to gather together and celebrate. In the past we used to host a community wide event to observe PI Day. Two years ago we cancelled the event due to COVID in spite of people having already made their PIs. Last year we didn’t even try and just had a household observation. This year we weren’t ready to have an open party so we limited it to ten people. However we seemed to have picked a great group.
So everybody contributed a Pi.
Finally we served a Tornado Pi.
It took a great effort from the participants, but the Pi stock was greatly reduced.
After feasting, the Pi games started.
We closed the night with Pi songs.
The Day They Discovered Pi
(To the tune of American Pie)
A long, long time ago
Long before the MPCA
And things like St. Patty’s Day
The Hellenic Republic
Was full of smarts
And a question resting
On the Grecian hearts was
What is the circumference of a circle?
But they were set on rational numbers
And it ranks amongst their biggest blunders
They worked on it for years
And confirmed one of their biggest fears
I can’t be certain if they cried
When irrationality was realized
But something deep within them died
THE DAY THEY DISCOVERED Pi
They were thinking Pi, Pi, mathematical Pi

With less than three days to recover, we celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day

Even Cybil helped celebrate!
Kayak Adventure 2022-01
The day after St. Patrick’s Day was forecast to get up to 66 degrees and we wanted to try out the new kayaks, so we scouted the launch.
The weather was good and the launch was clear so we decided to have a go.
We wanted to put all three kayaks on one car but decided that it was impractical. So we ended up taking two cars.
These are our new Hobie Lynx kayaks. They are pedal kayaks. We got them to allow our hands to be free to facilitate photography and fishing from the kayaks.
We pedaled around the dam for awhile and then headed to Moody Point. There was some floating ice that we fooled around with but they were more substantial than meets the eye.
We bumped a juvenile eagle when we headed downstream.
The kayaks were pretty stable and turned well. We rode the tide out to Moody Point from Newmarket. It was a chore to paddle against the tide to make it back to the launch even with a tailwind. It was a successful first use of the new kayaks. Many more adventures to come, hopefully.
