Gundalow Cruise

A Gundalow is a flat bottom lateen rigged cargo boat active on Great Bay from 1750 to 1850. By 1850, the sailing boats were replaced by railroads as commerce moved inland. For a period of time, the Gundalows were the primary commerce movers along the coast.

We have a community cruise on the Gundalow once a year. This year it was on Friday night in place of our usual BYO. We gathered at the dock at Adams Point as a prior cruise was coming in to dock.

The vessels had a very shallow draft and were suitable for navigating the waters in Great Bay at most tidal stages.

We had a two hour sail and spent most of our time in Little Bay.

Safely Docked after a cruise

It was a very pleasant cruise. We got to see beautiful scenery and learn a bit of history in the process. A good time was had by all.
